Search Engine Optimization, Web 2.0 And Keyword Tools And Techniques

SEO has always evolved according to the onslaught of new web development. Certainly Web 2.0 has profoundly influenced SEO methods such that the teachers should explain SEO in a different flavour yet again. Though on many occasions webmasters get bewildered over dropped web pages only to see them get re-indexed again, the benefit of hindsight will enable the SEO-savvy person to adopt consistent practices that ensure their pages will, more often than not, appear in the search engine results AND to the searchers' attention regardless of how the search engine algorithms are going to change again.

With that being said, I'm going to present my take on SEO. It is what I've done for the past 4 years and it is not likely that I'll radically change my methods except to improve on them. That means SEO is not so much about keeping up with the latest techniques than it is about a habitual routine.

So first and foremost, SEO is a habit rather than a set of techniques.

Second, the chief aim of SEO is to get visitors and readership, NOT to get pages indexed or ranked for its own sake. Lest I confuse you, let me say in all the things that you do, you want to have a desired end result. Getting your pages indexed is practically a given even if you don't do SEO at all these days.

It's a bigger challenge to fufill a goal for a certain number of visitors because according to a study by iProspect, only 23% of searchers go beyond the second page, and the numbers drop for every page thereafter. 10.3% of Internet users will look through the first 3 pages of results, while just 8.7% will look through more than 3 pages. Knowing these statistics will determine the standard by which your SEO habits will meet.

Let's look at the first diagram for this chapter:

Recall that I mentioned consistent practices is needed, so SEO doesn't stop. You can see there's quite a lot of traffic sources you need to set up but you may consider some of them as optional or you can outsource the work.

Blogging is not an option! It is a MUST. Quite likely, you've heard "search engines love blogs". Given the underlying reason that SEO works for as long as your site remains active and updated, a blog is not a blog if you don't publish fresh content on it. I wrote in greater detail about blogging and how it relates to SEO:

Why Google spiders love blogs and snippets too.
Your 2 “SEO by blogging” tips are...

When you begin to appreciate the effectiveness of submissions (in general) and social bookmarking, you may be tempted to abuse the system. Bear in mind each site has its own terms and conditions, and the webmaster behind each site wishes to do things his/her own way. Respect his/her wishes. If you are rejected because of a duplicate article, don't push your luck a second time and get your account banned in the end...Then again, nothing can stop you from registering a new e-mail address and reboot.

There are hundreds of article directories on the Net and finding them is as easy as searching for "article submission directories", but as of this time of writing I only concentrate on these sites now: iSnare, Helium, Article Scholar, Article Street, Articles Alive, WebsiteBlaze, Triond, Buzzle, Qondio, Popular Articles, Site Reference, Ezine Articles, Blogz.org, Distribute Your Articles, ArticlesBase, GoArticles, SelfGrowth, EzineMark, Article Dashboard, Article Stars, Astonishing Articles, Linknami, Concept Marketing Group, Amazines, eArticles Online, Article Alley, U Publish Articles, Management And Business Articles, PromotionWorld, Article City, Article Cupboard, Ultimate Article Directory, Zimbio, ArticleCube, The PR, SurefireWealth, ArticleFeeder, Article Trader, Articles Factory, Article Matrix, Town Crier Articles, Znoog, 24by7 Articles, Original Articles Directory, Articles Factory, Save MPID!, Your Articles, Business Know-How, Blogger Talk Articles, Articles Business, Blue Water Articles, Advertising Know-How, Internet Marketing Articles Directory, Article Rich, ArticleDude, Basic Directory, Webzine Articles, Article Source, Article Depot, Content For Reprint, A1Articles, Article Storehouse, Articles And Success*, Work On Internet, Article Surge, My Ezine Articles, Business Article Directory, Friends For Cash, Newbie Marketers*, Social Daddy, Article Wheel, TRCB, Bizzy Blogz, Connecture, Better Networker, Perfect Networker, PeopleString, Wayn, Naijapals, Article Yard, Learning To Earn Online, Article Treasure, Conscious Words, Gather, Examiner, Singapore Business Directory, Ezine Articles, Mr Matcos Article Directory, iBizBook, Your Online Articles, Bharat Bhasha, Unarchived, Infowaremall, Zangze, Board Of Directors Social Network, ParckPlace, Cokoye, exploreB2B, Quora, FAFY, Self SEO, Davao Blogs Directory, APSense, Netlog, Blog Drive, Textlinks, My Life Thinking, Journaland, SEOLinkVine, Salam Business Club, ABC Directory, Article Directory*, Found Article, Technorati, FYI Files*, Assembly Of Words, Informationsmarketing, mensch-und-leben, MJH Mobile Media, Co-op Advertising, Gofriendly, Malaysia Online Network, FanBox, HBC's Total Access, Kooiii Business Cooperative, New Ezine Articles, Article Blasters, Article Field, PubArticles, Instant Blog Subscribers, Better Web Place, Flixya, Kilkot, OnTopList, IM Faceplate, iWebTool, Vator, Million Dollar Network, BlogLog, Storeboard, Internet Marketing Forums, Free Giveaway, Social Media Marketing Risk Management, Intichat, Artipot, Skyrock, Jihoy, My Money Making Group, Startup.biz, Home Based Business Network, Sell Your Items, Silicon Cape Initiative, Promotion And Advertising Club, The Black Business Social Network, Black StartUpBiz, GFCC-FUN, The "Free" Affiliate Marketer Network, Work From Home India and Startup Net.

Don't pay too much attention to doing link exchanges, because the real currency is in content, and that's what Internet users search for, so you can 'lure' them to your site if they're happy with what they read. However, the idea of creating backlinks is of utmost importance since Google PageRank, which affects your page's SE position, hinges on this. Backlinks and SEO goes hand-in-hand.

Download your essential Web 2.0 report "Monetizing Secrets Of Going Web-Social" where I discuss more interesting methods to get your name and site known and gain more visitors.

Of course, I've not implied you can't rank ordinary web pages just as effectively. I think the paradigm shift from thinking of SEO as "gaming the system" started when Google incorporated Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) into its SE algorithm. With LSI, the best way to emphasize keywords comes in the form of web pages encapsulating a major theme. Moreover, if you read the LSI description in Wikipedia, it is a technique in natural language processing. This is really good news for SEO-illiterate folks because SEO now seems easier. Simply write in proper English, make it a habit to remember and mention all possible and relevant keywords of your industry in your content and provide the best value on behalf of your business.

A new web design term arised in 2007 to address LSI: silo. It seems to be coined by my friend Charles Heflin :) The structure of a blog is a fantastic example of silo web design. With more webmasters setting up blogs as websites, they don't even have to think about it when they can create new categories and assign blog posts to a chosen category.

Well, it is still good to understand what the silo concept is all about. As you can see from the diagram above, it starts with a main category, then breaking down into sub-sets of related keywords and all the appropriate articles that come under them. The other important characteristic to note is how the pages are internally linked to one another. There is a challenge here because:

1) The search engine spiders are not known to probe web pages more than 3 levels deep.

2) The spiders also do not regard all web pages with the same weightage in terms of PageRank or other metrics of significance.

With proper linkages in silo web design, you can fulfill 2 goals:

1) Ensure that human visitors can navigate around your site easily.

2) Ensure that PageRank can be "passed on" to secondary pages, starting from the Index Page.

How you link all the pages into their own theme sections is what will reinforce the categories and and the overall strength and merit of the website. You can learn more about silo web design from Charles' The Master Plan. This is a solid guide that takes away the mystery of LSI and keyword research and mainly describes a practical silo site structure and traffic development plan for immediate implementation.

Alternatively, J.P. Schoeffel shares his most profitable strategy to identify niches-on-demand and a blueprint for creating silo-structured websites that make you money in the 2nd volume of his 5-volume e-book series “How To Turn Sites Into Money“.

Now let's take the creation of themes to another level: the mini-web.

If you have lots and lots of content, then you have a good chance to "expand your repertoire" in the eyes of your visitors. You can graduate your silo themes into their own sites and interlink them, and then you come back to the "square one" question: what makes each and every site profitable? What makes your sites profitable is the reason why you come into business from a certain angle in the first place and the long-term strategies that make them work. I stand on the side of webmasters who do not wish to register a domain name and publish a site only to see it shoot high up in the Alexa ranks and drop steadily as time goes. If you can finally make a mini-web worthwhile, you're really at the cusp of beginning an online empire.
