How To Upsell

 

Upselling is the art of selling the next consecutive product immediately after your customers have bought the first one. This helps you ride on his/her purchasing momentum.

 

The normal advice is that upselling occurs on the Thank You/product download page. Actually, if you can make a sharp distinction between the various Thank You pages you may already have on your site, you can advertise more products than you may think.

 

Here are some 'labels':

1) Newsletter Thank You Page

2) Paid Product Thank You Page

3) Members Area Sign-up Page

4) Use your 404 Code for your 404 error page at your site (sell a product every time visitors got your URLs wrong!)

5) Safelist Sign-up Thank You Page (if you run a safelist)

6) E-mail Confirmation Page

7) Opt-In Thanks You Page

8) Are there any more?

 

See? There are more places you can sell than you ever thought of. You can even include Adsense ads for additional income-by-clicks.

 

This is your homework: review all your Thank You pages and think of at least 2 products related to the subject matter of each page so that you can put them in.

 

Think of creative ways to make offers that are only exclusive to a few Thank You pages. Especially for the 404 error page, make your visitors feel they 'stumble' into a once-in-a-lifetime offer they can't resist, and you would hook them to a sale. For your interest, add the following statements to your ,htaccess file (or create one) to make redirections from invalid pages work:

 

ErrorDocument 400 http://www.yourdomain.com
ErrorDocument 401 http://www.yourdomain.com

ErrorDocument 403 http://www.yourdomain.com

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomain.com

ErrorDocument 500 http://www.yourdomain.com

 

And upload this file to the root directory of your website.

You've heard it before. A marketer's list is the number one asset in their business.

 

But there's little or no value in it unless it's built *in* by the marketer. It doesn't come by building *up*. In other words, most of the value comes from quality, not quantity.

 

The size of your list can actually work against you.

 

You must have responsive subscribers. These are not bought, they're cultivated.

 

If you want responsive subscribers, you must become credible in their eyes. Every marketer's got to have credibility.

 

It's the single most important thing to your success, and yet it's neglected...nobody tells you how to create it. It's also neglected in practice. You see it all the time.

 

As a matter of fact, it's easy to see from a buyer's point of view, but if you're a marketer without a solid grip on all the ways to kill your credibility, as well as to boost it, then it's not so easy. And once it's dead, it usually stays dead.

 

There's no such thing as built-in credibility. You have to work your way from the ground up. And if it were easy, we'd all be millionaires by now.

 

But you don't have to be an expert or a great copywriter. For that matter, you don't even have to be a *good* copywriter.

 

It's all within your grasp. This is something you can build and maintain yourself, from where you sit today.

If you don't have a list, you're still in luck. You couldn't find a better lead generator. Not only would your visitors be happy to give up their information, but they'd thank you afterwards. Plus, the whole back end sales process is already built in for you!

 

Here's what really sets this book apart. It seems that conventional logic has it that you have to sacrifice the best interests of your present and potential customers in order to make a lot of sales and be profitable.

Truthfully, it's a little painful for Laurence to give it away, knowing that some people will not respect it, due to the fact that it's free. He spent several months working on this full-time!

 

It's a tradeoff, but the upside is too great to ignore. There's more benefit for everyone involved this way. You'll want to present this to people as soon as possible though. Like anything else that's good, it'll end up being passed around all over. Building powerful relationships is your BEST key to long-term success in business.
