Using LinkedIn Status Updates To Win New Clients

LinkedIn is without doubt one of the most effective online tool for professionals to grow their business. Even if you’re not a LinkedIn expert, using it is not too difficult. It is certainly within the capabilities of most professionals. Aside from using it just to put up an online CV and a corporate profile, they can also use LinkedIn to make new connections with potential clients and contacts. Still, there is much in LinkedIn features to exploit. One of these is the LinkedIn status update.

LinkedIn status updates can be used in two ways to help you grow your client base.

The first area is the way you use your own status updates. LinkedIn status updates are a nice way of helping to stay top of mind with contacts. Constantly e-mailing or calling can seem too pushy but a LinkedIn status update can prove to be a gentle, non-intrusive reminder of what you do.

Depending on their settings, your contacts will get a regular e-mail with a summary of the status updates of their contacts. They also see the status updates on their LinkedIn home page. Most updates are quite dull, simple profile updates or new connections. So if you can create interesting updates that actually send a useful message: “Ian is relaxing after an intensive selling skills workshop – great feedback” then it will more subtly get across your capabilities and expertise.

It’s also useful to track the status updates of your contacts.

You can learn a lot from this. You can quickly note when things have changed in their lives. It may seem like trivia, but anything they flag up must mean something to them, so if you have something useful to say in response then comment on their status or send them a message.

Look out especially for when they connect with new people. If you think those new contacts would prove to be valuable and useful, now is the ideal time to ask for an introduction from your existing connections as their conversation will still be fresh.

So use status updates well and although it probably won’t change your world, it could well bring you in some nice new business.

I’ve recently started using PagePressApp. It’s an app that allows me to connect my Facebook fan page to my WordPress blog.

There are a couple of reasons I started using this app.

First, a lot of my fans on Facebook don’t know about my blog, even though I’ve listed it on my fanpage info tab. Guess most people don’t bother to look.

Secondly, if I update my blog, I have to manually insert the link on my fanpage, each time to share the blog post with my fans. Sometimes I forget and my fans, if they follow my blog, miss out on any important updates.

So I started looking for ways to automate this. There are so many apps out there that allow people to share blog posts or news reports at a click of a button on Facebook but it’s very hard to find one that works for a Facebook fanpage.

The thing that I like most about PagePressApp is that it’s practically a set and forget thing. I integrate it to my Facebook fanpage, enter my preferred configurations and it continues to syndicate my blog posts on my fanpage whenever I update my blog.

Plus, it syndicates my blog posts on two locations on my fanpage wall and a separate tab for my blog where my fans can go to see my blog posts minus all the clutter on my fanpage wall.

It is really easy to integrate the app to your Facebook account. The configurations are basically self explanatory but they do have video tutorials as well in the unlikely event that you find yourself lost so that department is basically taken care of.

There’s no doubt about it, Twitter has been steadily gaining momentum over the past few years and, like Facebook, has found its place within business marketing as well. So if you aren’t yet using Twitter to help your business, now is a good time to start!

Twitter is an exceptionally effective way to get out quick, succinct marketing messages while allowing you to reach audiences you may not otherwise have reached. How? Through hashtags. If you’re wondering what a hashtag is, it’s simply the # symbol followed by a keyword that you’re using to reach out to people. Once the # is in front of your buzz word, it becomes a link that Twitter users can click on to see what else is being said about that word.

Creating Your Own

A good way to get started is to create your own hashtag. This doesn’t mean go crazy and use the # symbol after everything you tweet, instead use it strategically to create a brand.

For instance, if you were promoting a wine tasting event for your company you could tweet something to the effect of “Getting ready for our #winetasting event – #WT2011”. This does two things:

1. It means that anyone who has searched hashtags for wine tastings will now find yours as well.

2. It has helped you to create a branding for your event (#WT2011).

But don’t just stop at Twitter to promote the hashtag you’ve created. Put it on your collateral marketing as well on your Facebook page, in your e-mails, on flyers being sent out, etc. This way, people will be able to search the hashtags to find all the different tweets regarding it.

Utilizing #FF

#FF is something called “Follow Friday” (or #FollowFriday), where users can utilize the #FF and then list out other followers they believe are worth following. This is a good way for you to help promote other businesses to your followers and in turn for them to promote you to their followers, so you are able to gain a wider range of people following your tweets. It’s also a good way to create a bond with those you are promoting and vice versa.

Use it Correctly

When using hashtags you need to be sure to do two things:

1. Make sure it’s all one word. For example, you want it to be #winetasting not #wine tasting. In the first instance, the entirety of “wine tasting” will be the link that people will be able to click on. In the second instance, only “wine” will become the link, with “tasting” left out.

2. Strategically place your hashtags into tweets, not just at the end. That way if people were to retweet your tweet to their followers, people will get the whole message. Twitter has the potential to help businesses maximize on marketing and increasing business, you just have to be willing to use the shortcuts they provide. Otherwise, you risk missing out on some valuable opportunities, and in today’s cut-throat business world, missed opportunities are not something you want to happen!
