Building Your E-List

According to consultant Wendy Montes de Oca, conducting online polls is a great way to add names to your e-list.

She says that for an e-list built with online polls, less than 2% of the names dropped off the list after 6 months.

Other methods Wendy recommends for e-list building include article marketing, reciprocal ad swaps for lead generation, and pay-per-click advertising.

Not working so well: buying e-mail addresses (“almost always a waste of money”), renting e-lists, sweepstakes, and e-mail address appending. “With these methods, more than 50% of the names dropped off the file after 6 months,” she says.

Why Building A List Via Your Blog Sucks

Posted October 4th, 2011. Filed under List Building

I’m sure you own blogs, even if only one blog.

Blogs are great tools for creating websites easily. More importantly, blogs have enabled us to share our knowledge and opinions easily with other people.

But the thing with blogs is that there are too many distractions. I mean, if you try to build a list with your blog, you’re guaranteed to get poor results.

For starters, there is the sidebar that links to other websites. Then there are commentators’ links, banner links, etc., all of these are outage.

Help!

Fear not, as there is a workaround to this.

Use this Premium List Magnet plugin and you’ll be able to easily and instantly (in 2 minutes) create your very own beautiful optin box to collect visitors’ e-mail or present a custom message/ad to them.

Your choice. Either way, you get them to take the action you want them to take. You lead them. You entice them. Show them offers, etc.

List building is easy when you have the RIGHT tools.

An Unusual Way To Build Your E-List by Bob Bly

Posted September 30th, 2011. Filed under List Building

Internet marketers are always looking for new ways to build their e-lists quickly and at an affordable cost.

Let me tell you about an under-used, non-obvious technique for adding new subscribers to your opt-in list.

Using it, I added 982 new subscribers to my e-list in just a few days—and these were buyers, not just prospects.

What I did is to create an e-book with broad appeal to my major markets, which are copywriters and Internet marketers.

In case you are curious, the title of the e-book is “Writing E-Books for Fun and Profit” and you can see the landing page at www.myveryfirstebook.com.

I also priced it to sell. The cover price is $59. But for a limited time, it is available from me for only $19—a discount of $40 off the regular rate.

Then I approached my affiliate with the biggest list and asked if they wanted to offer my new e-book to their subscribers.

Here’s the twist: instead of offering them the usual 50% commission, I told them they would get 100% commission.

That’s right. They’d keep all the money.

It worked like a charm.

My affiliates thought the e-book would appeal to their list, which makes sense, because they target some of the same markets (copywriters, Internet marketers) I do.

And with a 100% commission, they had a bigger-than-usual financial incentive to offer my e-book to their list.

So they sent a solo e-mail blast to their subscribers on a Thursday.

The e-mail they sent had a hyperlink that goes to my landing page for the product.

It’s a special affiliate hyperlink so we can track the source of the orders.

So what happened?

4 days later, by Monday, we had almost a thousand orders.

The affiliate was happy because they made nearly $19,000 on the deal.

Their subscribers were happy because they got a great e-book worth $59 for only $19.

And how did I win?

Since their subscribers bought the e-book directly from me, I added 982 new subscribers to my online list.

You could argue that by not collecting my usual 50% of the sale, I gave up $9,500 in profits.

But not really, because if I had not given 100% commission as an incentive, this affiliate, who owns a big and profitable list, would not have sent an e-mail promoting my product to their readers.

My out-of-pocket cost to fulfill these 982 orders was virtually zero, because the product is a downloadable PDF file.

Best of all, these are top quality subscribers I added to my list.

Unlike most list-building techniques, which add names to your list through free offers, here all the new names added to my list are buyers, not prospects—they’ve already spent $19 with me.

And buyers are always better than inquirers (those who join as a result of a free offer).

The lesson is threefold.

First, if you want affiliates and other online marketers to promote you to their lists, you have to make it financially worth their while to do so.

For a $19 product, a 50% commission means the affiliate gets only $9.50 per order.

That’s just too little to compensate them for the slot in their e-mail schedule you are asking them to give up to promote your product.

However, a 100% commission on a $19 product is equivalent to the standard 50% commission on a $38 product.

That’s still a relatively modest profit per order. But apparently, it was sufficient to get my affiliate to go forward with the promotion.

Second, price the product low. If you attempt this technique with a high-end product, you’ll get fewer orders—and add fewer new names to your e-list.

Third, create a product with broad appeal for this 100% commission affiliate deal.

That way, you capture the maximum number of new names from each affiliate’s mailing list.

Why is this technique of offering affiliates 100% of the sale used so infrequently by Internet marketers?

It’s psychological: even though you know it makes sense, writing that big commission check to your affiliate is painful.

But it really shouldn’t be. It costs you nothing out of pocket—revenues from product sales cover it 100%. And you added all those new subscribers without paying a dime for online advertising.

One other tip: on the landing page for the product, state clearly that $19 is a special time-limited offer, and that once it expires, the price will go up.

This gives visitors an incentive to buy now and not put it off, maximizing your conversion rates.

Viral ListSuccessful businesses are built on simple, fundamental concepts. Period.

There are no secrets, you only need to know how to apply these concepts effectively.

You can increase the number of people subscribing to your e-mail list by implementing just 2 of these fundamental concepts.

And the best part of it, this WordPress plugin will automate these 2 concepts and help you grow your e-mail subscription rates, making you more money in the process.

Tips For A Strong Squeeze Page

Posted August 19th, 2011. Filed under List Building

Everyone who has a good or a service to offer needs a good website to let people know about what they have to offer. One of the best ways to get the word out is through placing ads online. Therefore, every good website needs a good squeeze page.

Building a list through a squeeze page is vital to growing your business. Some call it a landing page. Either way. It’s a landing page because someone “lands there”. It is NOT your website. There are not multiple pages and choices. There is one page and one choice. The visitor can either sign up for your list or leave. They are being “squeezed” into a single decision. Sign up or leave.

So what makes a good squeeze page? Here are some elements you want to be sure to include:

A Strong, Compelling Headline

A good rule of thumb is to stick with the headline (or close to it) that got the visitor to click on the ad that brought them to the squeeze page. It was compelling enough for them to click, so don’t mess with what worked. Remember, you have precious little time to make an impression and make them want to stay and learn more. Make the headline clear and concise. Never go with cutesy, clever and confusing. If the visitor thinks “Huh?”, chances are you’ll lose them.

Benefits to the Visitor

Whether you have a product or a service, make a laundry list of the benefits to the visitor. Don’t list the features and don’t think of the benefits to YOU. Put yourself in the visitor’s shoes and think how their life or business would be better if they used your product or service. Narrow your list down and include each of the benefits as a bullet point in your landing page. Put the most important benefit as the first bullet point and the second most important benefit as the last bullet point. Interestingly, most people will read the first and last bullet points first. If those resonate with them, they will go back and read the rest.

Talk Directly to Your Visitor

Do your proper research and find out the needs of your customer. (Think customer avatar.) This is not about you and your needs. You will completely miss the boat if you think this way. Take yourself out of the equation and write to your visitor as if you know exactly what they need (and you will know, because you’ve done the research), and how their life or business will be better by using the product or service. Don’t talk over their head. Use language that is easy to understand.

No Other Links

Don’t confuse your visitors with any other links or possibilities to go anywhere else. Chances are they won’t come back.

Break up the Text – But Don’t Go Overboard

You don’t want to have a long squeeze page of paragraph after paragraph of text in the same size font. It’s hard on the eyes and it’s boring. The visitor will start skimming and eventually lose interest all together. Break it up with larger text and some bold or colored text. Leave some white space to give the eye a break. Use illustrations, graphics or pictures if at all possible; however, don’t go overboard. Don’t go crazy with wacky color combinations and fonts that are hard on the eyes. Don’t use flash animation that is annoying and takes a long time to load. Be interesting, but use static images and stay relevant.

Compelling Offer

If you are looking to have them sign up for your newsletter or list, have a compelling and relevant offer. A 10-page free report is a great offer…as long as it is of value and relevant to your product or service. You could have a short course or a free coaching session. If you have physical products, you can still give a service instead of a product. Think outside of the box. Don’t do what everyone else does!

Strong Call to Action

While we’re talking lists here…you may have a squeeze page that is all about a sale. One of the most important things you need in a squeeze page is a strong call to action. Whether you want your visitor to sign up for your newsletter/list or purchase your product, make your call to action crystal clear. Have your call to action several times throughout the landing page. It should always be visible “in the fold”. It should be in a call out box that is large, bold and has the price (if there is one) clearly annotated. If there is a form to fill out, make sure it is easy to fill out. Otherwise you will lose your customer.

Follow these simple tips and you will have a strong squeeze page that is worthy of your website and will help you build your list.
