Your Publishing Options At A Glance by Bob Bly

Posted September 5th, 2011. Filed under Business

There are 3 basic options for publishing a book:

1 – Self-publish it as an e-book.
2 – Self-publish it as a physical book.
3 – Sell it to a mainstream publisher (e.g., John Wiley & Sons).

I am frequently asked which publishing option is best. My answer is always the same:

>> #1 has the highest margin and profit potential. Choose it if your primary goal is to make money with your book.

>> #3 has the most prestige. Choose it if you want to use the book to promote your career or business.

>> #2 has some prestige but not as much as #3, and has better margins than #3 but less than #1. It’s a good choice for professional speakers who need a book to promote themselves to meeting planners and have a product to sell at their talks.
