Why Business Diversification Is Smart

When an investment adviser tells you to diversify, he’s telling you not to put all of your eggs into one basket, so to speak. If one investment goes bad, you don’t lose everything.

The same thing applies to your Internet business.

Imagine if most of your online income depends on SEO. That means getting free visitors from Google because your pages rank high in the search results.

That’s a great business model, but now let’s say Google changes their rules and your page drops off the first page of the results.

If you don’t have any other way to get visitors and make a profit, you’re in big trouble.

It’s the same if your business depends on Google AdWords.

You might be just killing it with your PPC ads one day, and then Google decides to change something. Now your ads don’t rank anymore and you’re not getting any clicks.

Just like with SEO, if your business is entirely dependent on PPC, you’re going to be hurting pretty bad.

I could go on, but you get the point…if your business depends on one income stream, you’ll be out of luck if that one stream goes away.

That’s WAY too big of a risk to take with your livelihood. Fortunately, it’s easy to avoid.

What It Means to Diversify Your Business

Diversification sounds fancy, but it’s really a simple idea.

You want to create multiple profit engines in your business. If one goes away, you’ll still have several others to keep the cash rolling in.

What you’re doing here is building a portfolio of income streams, just like you build a portfolio of investments.

Actually, all of these streams within your business ARE investments. That’s how you should think of them.

And you want multiple investments out there making you cash.

A Simple Strategy You Can Use Today

First, don’t get stuck on having just one way to profit online.

Believe me, it’s easy to do, especially if you’ve struggled for a long time before finally having something work.

Once you find that successful thing, you can be so happy that you get stuck there and never do anything else…until you wake up one day and your income got crippled somehow.

Always be looking for new cash streams to start up.

I suggest a simple strategy:

1) Pick one cash stream that you’ll treat as the “core” of your business. This won’t be your only cash stream, but it’ll be your main one.

2) Once your main business is doing okay, immediately start looking for another one. Get that one producing profits too.

3) Find one new cash stream every 3 months from then on.

This gets easier as you do it. Pretty soon you’ll be seeing all sorts of opportunities as you do more.

And once you have a nice portfolio of streams for your business, you’ll have a TON more flexibility and confidence.

For example, let’s say one of your streams is affiliate marketing. If there aren’t many great offers to promote in a given month, you can focus on something else that month.

This happens a lot with affiliate marketing. There has been a lot of garbage coming out recently, so you wouldn’t want to be promoting much right now (notice that I’m not).

That’s the kind of flexibility you have when you build yourself a portfolio of streams.

To get you started, here are a few ideas you want to investigate more:

* Blogging – Blogs are easy to set up. You can do some quick no-cost keyword research and find a great niche to start blogging in. Then you could install several different cash generators into your blog, like AdSense, selling text ad space through ad networks, banner ads for affiliate products, etc. And you can use your blog as your central “hub” for pointing people to any other businesses you have set up.

* Affiliate Marketing – Promoting other people’s products is a great business, and you can get started for nothing. The key is to focus on promoting only high-quality products. If you establish a reputation for doing that, you can make a mint. Create a simple no-cost offer to start growing your list, then start promoting related products to that list.

* Flipping Websites – This doesn’t mean creating sites from scratch and then selling them. That can be a LOT of work. What it really means is buying sites with a bunch of potential for cheap, fixing them up, then selling them for more than you paid. You can look for underdeveloped sites at someplace like Flippa.com, then figure out how to enhance them. For example, you could add an upsell to the sales flow, or add a free offer to the sales page. Then you can turn around and sell the site for more. Flippa only costs $19 initially to sell a site (plus a percentage of the selling price if it sells), so this won’t break the bank.

* Creating Niche Products – Do some keyword research and find a niche with lots of sites currently selling inexpensive information products. Then Google for “[niche]+forum” and read what people are saying about what information they need. If you write a short report to give them that information, based on some free Google research, you can build a nice business very fast.

* Buying and Selling Domains – This is a lot like flipping websites. Do some research to find keywords that get some nice traffic (not a bunch, just stead). Then find domains that use that keyword. If you go to a site like Sedo.com, you can “park” the domain and earn some cash from free visitors while it sits there, and you can offer the domain for sale.

Those are just a few ideas. There are plenty of others out there to choose from.

How I Diversify My Own Business

I’m not giving you advice I don’t follow myself. I diversify my own business!

As you probably already know, one part of my business focuses on the Internet Marketing market itself. That means:

* Creating products to help people succeed online

* Promoting high-quality products to my e-mail list, and negotiating great bonus deals for my subscribers

* Doing joint ventures with other marketers to grow my business and help more people

But that’s not the only part of my business.

I also have been growing businesses in various other niches since 2001. These businesses give me multiple cash streams, some of which run on autopilot.

I often find myself switching my focus back and forth between these two areas of my business. Sometimes one requires more attention than the other.

And yes, I’ve had a few niche businesses disappear. In some cases the niche went away entirely, and in other cases the niche stopped being very profitable.

But here’s the thing…I DIDN’T CARE.

Well, I cared, but it didn’t cripple my ability to feed my family or live my life. That’s because I had other cash streams that still worked, and they picked up the slack.

You can do exactly the same thing in your business.

Just follow the simple strategy I gave you earlier, and you’ll find yourself fully diversified. Then you can live your Internet life without any worries at all.

It’s a simple fact that search engine rankings can make or break your online business. The higher you are in the search engines, the more clicks you’ll get to your site, and the better chance you have to bring in revenue. And we’re all in this to bring in some revenue right?!?

But the golden question is…HOW DO I GET HIGHER IN THE SEARCH ENGINES?!?

If there was an easy answer…everyone would be doing it! But of course Google likes to keep things interesting and keep us on our toes and change things up for us from “time to time”.

There are, however, some key factors that everyone should be aware of. Most of the veterans know these things…but even veterans lose sight of the basics occasionally and it’s good to get a reminder.

“On-page factors” refer to the parts of your site that you control. They are the elements of your site itself: the way your page is structured, the words you use, etc.

Some key things you can do to improve your site’s rankings from using on-page factors include:

* Use text, not pictures as your main communications tool

This is often a fault of artist-designed pages. Because they want to control the typefaces, placement and appearance of their pages, artists oftentimes build entire sites using pictures of words, not the words themselves. Although the design of the site is important, using too many images is bad, because the search engines can’t see words that are contained in pictures, they can only see actual text.

To test this, go to your site, place your cursor at the bottom right corner of your site, left click and drag your cursor to the left and up the page. Any words that turn blue character by character are coded as text (that’s good!). Any words that turn blue all at once (usually this will happen with large amounts of text at the same time) are pictures of words (that’s bad!). Generally you want to have any keywords you want to rank on in the search engines as text on your pages, not as pictures of text.

* Use keyword-rich title tags

Title tags are shown only in the line at the very top of your browser (the one with the X in the corner to close out the browser) and are included in the header of your page’s code proceeded by the tag. This is an important tag, because only 64 characters are actually displayed. They should be succinct, and include the keywords you are targeting with that specific page. Don’t make the mistake of leaving the title tag blank (it will appear as ‘Untitled’), having it be only your company name (presumably the search engines will get that your site is from your company and index it under that term, so unless you have a very well-known company, leave your company name out of your title tag and instead have it tell them exactly what this page is about), and being the same on every page of your site. Also, remember that the title tag is generally what appears as the first line of your listing on the search engines, so it should also encourage people to click by grabbing attention, creating curiosity, and clearly indicating what that page is about.

* Selectively use bolds, italics and larger sized type

Search engines tend to give higher weight to content that is coded to stand out. Be careful, though, about not overusing this technique as it is popular with spammers and you will receive penalties for overuse!

* Link within your site

Many people ignore the power of properly linking within their site. For example, you may want to link to other pages within your site as resources, to create definitive guides which you link to from other pages on your site, and link to specific blog posts. As always, don’t go overboard with this. Make sure that these links are within the body of the page, not just in the side and bottom navigation bars!

* Build larger sites, rather than small individual sites

Evidence shows that larger sites (greater than 100 pages of content) tend to do better in the search engines than smaller sites. While part of this may also be that larger sites tend to be older than smaller sites, it appears that it is better to add additional content to an existing, related site, rather than creating a new site targeting specific keywords.

Now, pay special attention to this next point—we saved the most important point for the last:

* Add new content to your site daily (yes, daily!)

Search engines like frequently updated sites, and new content generates more and more food for the search engine spiders to consume and index. A strategy of daily creation of at least one new high-quality content page, which targets a specific keyword, and is linked to with a text link from within your site, could be one of the best SEO tools you could possibly practice! I know it’s hard, but it is definitely worth it! These can be articles, blog posts, new products, how-to information, whatever. The key is something new and good every single day.

At least once a week I get an e-mail from someone asking me: “What’s considered a good response rate for direct mail?”

In some ways, it’s a meaningless, even absurd, question.

Why? Because the only logical—and honest—answer can be: “It depends.”

What does it depend on?

The product…the marketing…the mailing list…the offer…the price…the economy…the terms…the guarantee… the cost of the mailer…even what happens on the evening news the day your piece is mailed.

My usual response is to ask my e-mail correspondent: “Well, what is your marketing goal?”

By that I mean, are you hoping your direct mail will make a profit—that is, generate $1,000 or $2,000 or $3,000 in sales for every $500 spent on the mailing?

Many small business owners want that kind of return or better. They want direct mail to generate an ROI that’s some multiple of its cost.

On the other hand, traditional direct marketers, especially large ones, are often content to have a mailing bring in new customers “at cost”.

By “bring in new customers”, we mean getting strangers—whose names appear on the mailing lists we rent—to place their first order with the company.

By “at cost”, we mean the company makes no profit on the initial order, e.g., a mailing that costs $10,000 generates $10,000 in sales.

Experienced direct marketers are often content to bring in new customers at cost because they know that, once they acquire a customer, they can make money on the “back end”—selling additional products to that same customer.

In fact, in most traditional direct marketing businesses, the bulk of the profits are made on the back end, not on the initial order, known as the “front end.”

At least one major direct marketer has told me they are actually content to bring in new customers at a slight loss, because their back end is so profitable.

So whether your goal is to acquire new customers at cost, double your money on the mailing or whatever, you need to know the percentage response required to break even.

For instance, if your gross profit is $70 per unit sold, and mailing a thousand pieces cost you $700, you need 10 orders to break even—a 1% response.

The gross profit on your product is the selling price minus the cost of goods.

If your product sells for $80, and it costs you $10 to make or buy, your gross profit is $70 per unit.

Yes, there is the cost of shipping and handling, but for our purposes, I will assume you charge your customers for shipping and handling, and that the extra charge just covers the cost.

The cost of the mailing is calculated by adding the cost of its 4 components: mailing list rental, postage, printing, and “letter shop”—the cost to assemble the components of the direct mailing and bring it to the post office.

These 4 expenses—list rental, postage, printing, and letter shop—are “recurring costs”, which means you incur them every time you mail.

“What about the fee I paid my copywriter and graphic artist?” I am often asked.

These are one-time charges and are typically not incorporated in the break-even calculation.

By the way, a lot of people also ask me: “I’ve heard that the average direct mail response rate is 2%. Is that true?”

It was never really true—and is less so now.

The 2% figure was, at one time, the average response rate to direct mail packages selling magazine subscriptions.

But that was for magazines only.

The response rates for other products and other offers were different.

For instance, seminar promoters often got response rates from 1/4 to 1/2 percent and sometimes as low as a tenth of a percent.

And, response rates overall today are declining.

One fundraising consultant told me that response rates for direct mail in the non-profit field used to average 3%.

But today, they are closer to 1%.

Why the decline?

Consumers are bombarded by so much mail and so many other advertising messages competing for their attention that it’s more difficult to grab their attention.
