At one point in his immortal “Acres Of Diamonds” speech, Russell H. Conwell—in reference to personal greatness—blew a common misconception during his time by saying, “This country is not run by votes. Do you think it is? It is governed by influence.”
From then on, I realized how big a word like ‘influence’ truly is. Big, yet intangible and beguiling. Very few people know how to project influence (that’s why network marketers fail!). Of those who do, they enjoy command and control over resources at their disposal, and that includes money.
Influence, like sales communication, is very much the means to everything in life, but the lessons of it are far and few. If I can recall any title immediately, that would be Robert Cialdini’s “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion”, and then what else?
