"I decided to respond to this request for a lecture, and
when asked for the title of my address, I suddenly felt that it
should be "A Fortune to Share". This was when banks
and business institutions were failing all over the country and
personal fortunes were disappearing with alarming rapidity.
"Right in the midst of this financial disaster I felt rich,
peaceful and spiritually secure. I felt as though I really had
a fortune to share with those panic-stricken individuals whose
dream castles of material wealth and earthly possessions were
tumbling down around their confused heads.
"Therefore, I went to Louisville and faced my first large
audience without a trace of nervousness. In former days, my fear
would have been so great that I probably would have collapsed
at the mere thought of making such a public appearance. Now, however,
I was able to share my fortune of useful ideas with perfect poise,
and I am grateful to relate that my message was received with
standing applause by that distinguished audience.
"On my return home, the Advertising Club of New York invited
me to address one of its popular luncheon meetings.
"I responded and my talk went over the air. At the conclusion,
I received a great many telephone calls, telegrams and letters
from people who had listened to the address and wanted copies
of it.
"I had the speech multigraphed and mailed to those who requested
it, but to my surprise, the address seemed to spread around like
wild fire.
"More and more requests came in. Without waiting for permission,
individuals and business organizations made copies of it and distributed
them all over the country. A public-spirited man in California
became so enthusiastic that he had the entire address reprinted
in a newspaper. It occupied a full page, for which he gladly paid
advertising rates as his contribution to the community in which
he lived.
"I began receiving requests for lecture engagements from
Maine to California, and I filled hundreds of them.
"From the platform I simply told of my personal experience
with both the wrong and right side of life.
"Fortunately for me, I was now brought into contact with
the publishing house of Bobbs-Merrill, of Indianapolis.
"As a result, my first book appeared in 1931."
